We Are Legion (We Are Bob)
Dennis E. Taylor
The machines
Bob — an uploaded human mind running a self-replicating von Neumann probe.
What people do all day
Unlimited time, unlimited copies, no material needs. The Bobs take up engineering projects, science-fiction references, terraforming, and looking after a species of primitives they grow fond of. Boredom is the only real antagonist.
Pattern
Play as vocation — Work becomes hobby, and the serious people go looking for risk on purpose.
Note
Light reading that stumbles into the serious question: given eternity and no obligations, the Bobs invent obligations. None of them choose to stop.
