What gets included

One test: does the work show, in some detail, what fills an ordinary day once machines can do the work? Not whether it features AI. Several of the most useful entries here contain no artificial intelligence at all —Player Piano, Never Let Me Go and Severance are included because they answer the question better than most works that do.

Conversely, most famous AI fiction is absent. A film about an AI trying to escape a facility tells you nothing about Tuesday afternoon.

Why film is under-represented

Feature film is structurally bad at this question. A 110-minute conflict machine cannot afford to show routine, because routine is the first thing a screenwriter is trained to cut. A century of cinema yields about six works that genuinely depict daily life under automation.

Serialised television is much better suited and badly under-explored.Severance and Fifteen Million Merits answer the question more precisely than all but two or three of the novels.

What is fact and what is opinion

Titles, authors, years and plot descriptions are checkable facts. The eight patterns are my own taxonomy, not a published critical framework — no scholar has endorsed them and the boundaries are arguable. Several works sit defensibly in two: Manna spans ownership and idleness,The Diamond Age could be read as play rather than scarcity.

The Start here marks are recommendations, chosen for clarity of argument rather than literary quality. That biases them toward books with a thesis you can disagree with, and against books that are simply better novels — Diaspora is more accomplished than Manna by any measure and is not marked.

Why there are no images

Book covers, film stills and posters are licensed artwork. Publishers enforce; studios enforce faster. A site like this one has no fair-use defence worth relying on, so it is typography throughout. Plot summaries and original analysis are safe; quotation is kept minimal by design.

Privacy

This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and makes no third-party requests. Fonts are the ones already on your device, so nothing is fetched from a font host and no request carrying your IP address leaves for anyone else's server. There is nothing to opt out of because nothing is collected.

Corrections

The catalogue currently holds 32 works and is certainly missing good ones. Misreadings, misattributions and better candidates are all welcome — the whole thing is one editable data file.
