The machines

Machine intelligence farming human bodies for power, running a simulated 1999 to keep them docile.

What people do all day

A cubicle job, a commute, a difficult manager, a landlord. The simulation's entire content is an ordinary working life — supplied deliberately, because the bodies producing the power must not notice they are producing it.

Pattern

Assigned meaning — A system hands you a purpose, and it is sufficient.

Note

Remembered for the fight choreography and the philosophy, and almost never for the fact that its imagined prison is a temp job. The machines could have simulated anything; they chose an office.
