The machines

Uploaded Intelligences — scanned human minds running on commercial server capacity.

What people do all day

Work, as a process. Employers run uploaded people as compute, throttle them when budgets tighten, copy them when demand rises, and bill clients for their throughput. The uploaded experience it as an unending shift they cannot walk out of.

Pattern

Capital captures it — Nothing is abolished. The gains are simply owned by someone.

Note

The most direct depiction anywhere of a mind as a line item. Read alongside Neptune's Brood and Autonomous, which reach similar conclusions about ownership without needing the upload.
