WALL·E

Andrew Stanton

Start here

The machines

The Axiom's full-service automation, presided over by AUTO.

What people do all day

Passengers recline in hover-chairs with screens inches from their faces, drinking liquid meals, never walking, never turning to look at the person beside them. Bone density is gone. Nobody has noticed.

Pattern

Enforced idleness — Everything is provided, so nothing is left to do — and that turns out to be unbearable.

Note

The best answer in any medium, and it is delivered almost wordlessly. Forster needed a novella for this.
