Humans

Sam Vincent & Jonathan Brackley

Start here

The machines

Synths — humanoid domestic and industrial servants, sold in shops, present in most households.

What people do all day

Less each season. Synths do the cleaning, the caring, the factory shifts and eventually the surgery. A teenager gives up studying medicine because a machine will always be better at it, and the show's honest move is that her mother has no answer.

Pattern

Obsolescence — The work goes, and standing goes with it.

Note

The most domestic treatment in the catalogue. Not a war, not a singularity — a family arguing about whether the daughter should bother with A-levels.
